Military Helmets
Helmets in the military have two uses. One advantage of wearing a helmet is that it can serve as protection from external projectiles like bullets, but it can also serve as a landmark to identify friends from enemies.
Helmets used in the military in the past
Military helmets are widely available and come in a variety of styles. Some helmets had very distinctive shapes in the past. These helmets, which were primarily made of leather, at one point proved to be incredibly ineffective in the trench warfare of the First World War. After unsuccessful attempts to use forehead armor, it was decided to use steel helmets in 1916.
Steel helmets were already in use in other nations at the time. The surface of these steel helmets, however, had to be as smooth as possible. The helmet was likely to be punctured when the different layers were applied because the bullet could not bounce off.
For instance, this occurred with the Dutch helmets from the Second World War, which had an oval lion plate. Many Dutch soldiers decided to remove the lion when they realized that enemy bullets could pass through this plate more easily than the rest of the helmet. The helmet plate’s grooves were the cause of this incident.
In the Second World War, British soldiers wore unique helmets. The infantry’s pan-shaped helmet is the most recognizable helmet used by the British. These helmets were very simply constructed.
Nearly round in shape, the liner was fastened to the helmet’s top with a screw. The RAC tank helmet was also made in an uncomplicated manner. The interior of this helmet was also very plain and almost round. The helmet had a strap that could be used to secure it to the wearer’s head at the bottom.
The majority of helmets in the 20th century were made of steel. These days, people are also beginning to use plastic to make strong, lightweight helmets.
